With the Mono no Aware fountain pen, Sailor presents another gem of maki-e art. This fountain pen, the size of the King of Pen (KOP), was created in a limited edition of 100 by urushi artist Natsumi Saitou and is exclusive to the European market.
The underlying technique is known as Tame-Sukashi: a mixture of two different lacquer colors. One slightly transparent and one significantly more colorful and opaque. Here, these two lacquers were applied alternately in numerous layers. This creates a fascinating play of colors with a great sense of depth between the turquoise lacquer and the black-transparent lacquer, which also becomes lighter over time.
The fountain pen has no clip, allowing the lacquer to shine through. The fountain pen is filled with a converter and has an extra-large 21-carat gold nib. This is available in two options: a standard M nib or a Naginata Togi nib in M. The latter is elegantly ground like a Japanese sword and offers a stroke variation depending on the writing angle. The Naginata Togi M can write as wide as a B nib if the writing angle is kept very flat.
The fountain pen comes with accessories such as a converter, cartridges, and a pen case in a lacquered box. The edition is limited to 75 fountain pens with regular nibs and 25 fountain pens with Naginata Togi nibs.
