The Sailor Professional Gear Slim "The Nihon Express" is a limited edition that takes inspiration from the historic Tōkaidō and its current significance as one of Japan's most important travel routes. The series is available in three design variations: Tokyo, Shizuoka, and Kyoto. Each version is limited to 200 pieces.
During the Edo period, the Tōkaidō connected the former capital Edo, now Tokyo, with Kyoto. The approximately 500-kilometer road passed through 53 stations across different landscapes and regions of Japan. Its starting point was the Nihonbashi Bridge in Edo, and its destination was the Sanjō-Ōhashi Bridge in Kyoto.
Today, the name Tōkaidō also refers to what is probably Japan's most famous high-speed rail line. Opened in 1964, the Tōkaidō-Shinkansen was the world's first high-speed railway and connects Tokyo via Shizuoka, Nagoya, and Kyoto with Shin-Osaka. Thus, the modern rail connection follows the same important east-west axis in its fundamental concept as the historic road once did.
In the 19th century, the artist Utagawa Hiroshige captured the journey along the Tōkaidō in one of his most famous ukiyo-e woodblock print series. His depictions show travelers, villages, bridges, and changing weather moods, as well as views of Mount Fuji. The three variations of "The Nihon Express" edition pick up on different stations and landscapes of this historic and modern travel route.
Tokyo represents the starting point of the journey and today's metropolis.
Shizuoka represents the landscape around Mount Fuji and a central section of the route.
Kyoto forms the historic destination of the Tōkaidō and one of the most important stations of today's Shinkansen.
Each of the three models is limited to 200 pieces and is numbered on the cap ring. The Professional Gear Slim is equipped with a 14-karat gold nib, available in EF, F, MF, M, and B widths.
